Events
Portorož and Piran host each year around 40 international events. Every year starts with the traditional New Year's afternoon fireworks in Portorož (1st January). In spring (April) visitors can visit the Sea Salt Festival, which recalls the time, when local people left their homes in town and moved to Sečovlje saltpans, where they harvested salt, the most important source of income for the entire town for centuries. Summer is the time for numerous festivals and outdoor events. Visitors can enjoy Piran Musical Evenings concerts, which are organised in S. Francis Cloister in the Minorite Monastery in Piran (July and August); however, the most popular concerts take place in August within Portorož Summer Nights festival. Autumn on the other hand offers as well various events; the most popular among all is the Persimmon Festival, which takes place in November in Strunjan.
Piran is indeed a place of culture, as there are various musical, cultural and theatre performances scheduled all year round. Events like Piran Musical Evenings, International artist`s Ex-tempore, Primorska Summer Festival and the exhibition of Christmas cribs in Piran churches give the town a special charm. Those curious and desirous to learn something new could visit different museums and galleries or just wonder around lovely shops, Fruit and vegetables market or the Antiquities fair at the renovated Tartini square, which is named after the renowned violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, who was born in Piran.
